London - West Ham United strengthen the front line in the last moments of the summer transfer window by bringing Nikica Jelavic from Hull City. Meanwhile, Southampton pick up Virgil van Dijk from Celtic.
West Ham reportedly issued two million pounds, which could rise to three million pounds, to get Jelavic. The Croatian striker has agreed a two-year contract with the Hammers with an option to extend for another two years.
Jelavic, who is now 30 years old, became the third player to join West Ham on the last day of the summer transfer window. He followed Alex Song and Victor Moses, each of which is borrowed from Barcelona and Chelsea.
West Ham, Jelavic will again meet with the manager Slaven Bilic. Bilic had been a coach in the Croatian national team.
"I had previously played for Slaven the national team in Croatia and he is a manager and a great person. I am very pleased to be working with him and all his staff again," said Jelavic.
On the day of the transfer window closing, Southampton bring Van Dijk from Celtic for a fee reportedly reached 11.5 million pounds. The Dutch center-back has been contracted for five years by the Saints.
Van Dijk became the eighth new player in the squad Southampton. He will compete with Steven Caulker, Maya Yoshida, and Jose Fonte for a place in back line.
"I'm happy. It was a very easy decision. This is a very ambitious club, who has performed very well in recent years," said Van Dijk.
